Overcoming Creative Block

When you are feeling uninspired, unfocused, distracted, or just creatively flat, everything you create can feel like kindling for your next campfire. It's important for an artist of any definition (painters, musicians, writers, etc.) to work though your creative block or you may find that your creativity gets put on hold indefinitely. When I stepped away from art, nearly a decade passed before I remembered just how much peace sketching brought me.

Nip that creative block in the bud as quickly as possible—before it brings you too far away from your art. A long delay can lead to further creative blocks, a decline in self-esteem, increasing frustration—you name it. Best and worst case scenario; you simply lose sight of doing the thing you love.

Here are a few tips to help you get started and reignite your creativity:

Explore New Media: Try working with a different medium than you usually do. Experimenting with new materials, instruments, or genres can spark fresh ideas and inspire creativity.

Switch it Up: Try your hand at a completely different expressive art form. Are you a painter? Pick up a guitar! A pianist? Grab a sketchbook! Oftentimes creative people have more than one creative calling, and if your primary love is disappointing, you can still remain in creative mode until your spark returns.

Take a Short Break: Sometimes, stepping away from your current project and taking a short break can clear your mind. Go for a walk or engage in activities that relax you. But don't wait too long or like me, you may find that years have passed since you last did what you enjoy.

Seek Inspiration: Look at other artists' work for inspiration. Visit galleries, browse new music, or read art books to expose yourself to different styles and techniques.

Set Small Goals: Break down your project into small, manageable tasks. Setting achievable goals can help you make progress and regain motivation.

Join a Creative Community: Engage with other artists either online or in person. Sharing ideas and feedback within a community can inspire you and provide a fresh perspective on your work.

Take a Class or Workshop: There are a slew of local art classes and online workshops available to inspire you with something new. Writer's can benefit from prompt-based worksheets, like this Writer's Block Workbook from Upward Journals.

Remember, it's normal to experience creative blocks. By trying different approaches and staying open to new ideas, you can overcome creative blocks and continue to create meaningful art.

Love you!
